The Tiny Desk AI trend puts a group of people into Charlie Wilson's 2023 NPR Tiny Desk performance of "Outstanding", singing and playing in the same cluttered office. It took off in October 2026 with college football coaches swapped into the band. ZapVid makes you the lead singer and turns up to four friend photos into the keyboard player, the saxophone player and the two backup singers, with the same moves, cuts and mouth timing, in a 14-second vertical video. It takes 6 to 10 minutes and uses 100 credits ($9.99 buys 100).

What is the Outstanding Tiny Desk AI trend?
The trend starts from a real concert. On June 5, 2023, NPR Music published Charlie Wilson's Tiny Desk Concert, and his closing song was "Outstanding", the 1982 hit by The Gap Band. The clip people use is the last stretch of that song: the band singing behind a red keyboard, a grinning close-up of the singer, then a saxophone solo.
In October 2026, a TikTok creator posting as @theburnerfromhe11 cropped the clip to vertical and used AI to put five college football coaches who had all lost on the same Saturday into the band. There they were, beaming through a song called "Outstanding" a few hours after a loss. From October 19 the video spread on X, The Athletic covered it on October 23, and fans started making versions for NFL teams, owners and TV hosts.
A friend group, a team after a rough game or a family works with the same setup. Our example uses five original AI musicians, and your video puts you on lead vocals with your friends in the band.

What's in your Tiny Desk AI video
The video follows the viral cut in three shots. Here is who shows up where, so you know which friend to put in which spot.
| Time | Shot | Who is on screen |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 to 0:05 | Band | Keys at the red keyboard, with the two backup singers behind |
| 0:05 to 0:11 | Big grin | Lead singer (you) in close-up, singing and laughing |
| 0:11 to 0:14 | Sax solo | Sax player in close-up |
The lead singer only appears in the close-up, so you get the middle six seconds to yourself.
How to make an Outstanding Tiny Desk AI video
- 01
Upload your photo, then add your band
Your photo becomes the lead singer. Tap any other spot (keys, sax, back left or back right) to put a friend there, or scan the code to send photos from your phone. Friends are optional: any empty spot keeps the musician from the original clip.
- 02
Press Generate
The AI puts everyone into the whole clip in one pass and copies every move, cut and mouth movement. Your video is ready in 6 to 10 minutes, and you can leave the page while it renders.
- 03
Post it with the sound
Download the MP4. When you post on TikTok or Instagram Reels, pick the "Outstanding" sound in the app so the singing lines up and your video joins the trend.
Photo tips for the band
- One person per photo, facing the camera with the face fully visible.
- Waist-up or full body is best, because the band shot shows everyone from the chest up and your clothes carry over.
- You and the sax player get solo close-ups, so use your sharpest, best-lit photos for those two spots.
- Avoid sunglasses, heavy filters, blurry photos and group photos.
Who's in your Tiny Desk band?
Your fantasy league
Last place sings lead, and the four managers who beat them play the band. Post it in the league chat after the weekend.
Your team after a loss
The player who missed the last shot takes the close-up, and the rest of the starting five fill the band.
The group chat
Five friends, five spots. Whoever sent the worst take of the week gets the six-second grin.
Office, family, birthdays
The birthday person, the team lead after a rough quarter, or whoever lost game night. Ask everyone before you post.
If it doesn't come out right
- A face doesn't look like the photo
- Use a sharper, front-facing photo of one person, in good light, with nothing over the face.
- Two friends look alike in the video
- AI can merge friends who look alike. Photos in clearly different clothes help it tell them apart, since clothes carry over from each photo.
- A logo or print shows up wrong on the clothes
- Clothes come from each photo. A photo in plain clothes gives a cleaner result.
- The video failed
- The credits come back to your account automatically, and you can try again with different photos.
